Chinese Medicine To Boost Fertility and Acupuncture To Increase IVF Success

1 Mar, 2014 - Acupuncture, Blog, Herbal Medicine

Chinese Medicine (specifically acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine) is being used more and more to boost fertility, with stacks of research to back up just how effective it is.

Chinese herbs and acupuncture can improve fertility and pregnancy rates in several ways:

  • improve ovarian function to produce better quality eggs
  • regulate hormones to produce a greater number of follicles
  • increase blood flow to the uterus and increase the thickness of the uterine lining
  • relax the patient and decrease stress levels
  • prevent the uterus from contracting – increasing the liklihood of the embryo “holding”
  • lessen the side effects of drugs used in IVF
  • strengthen the immune system (very important as Western Medicine treatments usually decrease immunity)
  • improve the sperm count and motility to produce better quality embryos
  • decrease and prevent the chances of miscarriage
  • treat menstrual problems such as PCOS, endometriosis, irregular or disrupted cycles, which all inhibit fertility

Chinese Herbs for Improved Chances of Conception

Chinese medicine is successful in increasing a woman’s chance to conceive in several ways. First, Ovulatory issues can also be addressed with Chinese medicinal herbal formulas as they can balance hormones when ovarian failure is due to hormonal issues. Chinese herb formulas are especially helpful for older women who have mysterious unknown causes of infertility. Chinese herbs can also address structural issues leading to infertility such as scar tissue blockage in the fallopian tube, fibroids in the uterus, or endometriosis in women. For men, Chinese herbs are used to increase sperm counts and improve the motility of sperm for improved rates of conception.

There are a couple of advantages to using traditional Chinese herb medicine as an approach to improving fertility:

  • Chinese herbal therapy stimulates the body’s natural healing potential by treating root causes rather than just the symptoms
  • Chinese herbs decrease undesired side affects and accumulated toxicity

Acupuncture Improves Pregnancy Rates

Acupuncture not only helps manage the stress of infertility, it also improves pregnancy rates and quality of life.

Acupuncture can help increase a woman’s fertility by improving blood flow to the ovaries and uterus. This improved blood flow can help thicken the lining of the uterus, increasing the chances of conception. It may also help correct problems with the body’s neuroendocrine system. Acupuncture can help activate the brain to release hormones that will stimulate the ovaries, adrenal glands and other organs that are involved in reproduction. Acupuncture’s effect on the neuroendocrine system may also help infertile men by stimulating sperm production.

Acupuncture To Boost IVF Success

fertilityResearch published in the British Medical Journal has found acupuncture alone can increase pregnancy rates of people using IVF by up to 65%. The studies used showed that these success rates could be achieved by using acupuncture for just one day shortly before and after the transfer of embryos. Just one day of acupuncture can produce those results.

From our clinical experience, the more acupuncture you receive before transfer the better, as this gives your uterus the best chance it has for optimal blood flow, thickness and general health. Medical imaging shows that after acupuncture, the colour of women’s ovaries change from cloudy to bright and clear. The follicles double in number and the uterine lining becomes thicker. Patients experience less side effects from the Western drugs and feel better emotionally.

The bigger picture

When it comes to fertility and Chinese medicine, we’re concerned with much more than egg meeting sperm, forming an embryo and implanting in the lining of the uterus. We look at the bigger picture and ensure both parents are in top quality health prior to conception. Think about our bodies as fertile gardens for growing a healthy baby. The foundational soil – that is, the health of both mother and father – needs to be as balanced and nutrient-dense as possible to support a viable pregnancy.
